re: Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

Though I have yet discussed it here in this one of my purposes in life is to fight against racism and racial stereotypes. As an interracial family we find there are still a lot of racist people in the world. I came across this article yesterday about a white justice of the peace in Louisiana named, Keith Bardwell, who refuses to marry interracial couples

His reasons for denying a marriage license to interracial couples is that he believes race mixing is wrong, He doesn't think interracial marriages tend to last long, and he believes that the biracial children will suffer.

Well first of all if this man says he is not racist he is out of his MIND! He is the only problem we face as an interracial couple! Racist people like him.

He states that the children will suffer. My children are both (nearly) straight A students. My son is in a program for gifted children, only two children in his entire school had the intelligence level to qualify for this program. They both sing in the choir at school and soon at church as well. They both have friends from a variety of races; black, white, biracial, Latino.

Bardwell states, "There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage." When my children go to play with the black children in my neighborhood they are seen as black. There skin may be a little lighter than some kids they play with but none of the kids point them out as different. When they are in group of white people they are also viewed as black and the only people who have any issue with them are people who do not like black people. Therefore would it be fair to say that since black children may at some point encounter racism that black people should not be allowed the right to marry and have children? What would Mr. Bardwell have to say to that? If he really worried that the children might face some racism in their lives? NO. What he believes is that biracial children are an abomination.

Funny though, when a horse and a donkey breed they create a mule which is sterile because they were not meant to mix. When a white person and a black person have a child, we have beautiful caramel skinned children who can become president one day! Wait isn't our current president biracial, yes I believe he is, lol doesn't look like he is suffering too much Mr. Bardwell!

As for my husband and I we are very happy. The bible tells us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers and we both believe in God and He has blessed our relationship. We have been through so much together who knew the "In sickness and in health" would come so fast. We have been through the near death of one of his brothers, the death of his youngest brother, we have been through poor times and my pulmonary embolism, but whatever we have gone through just brought us closer together. I don't need to "prove" our relationship to anyone but I do want to represent for you another well adjust, happy interracial couple. I have seen no studies done stating that interracial couples don't last as long as same race couples. In fact maybe the fact that we do have struggles bring us closer together.
Whatever Mr. Barwell says, I know many beautiful interracial couples, and beautiful (many famous) biracial people. Mr. Barwell it is YOU that is the problem in this society. Not people who simply want to love, marry, and make beautiful babies together! THE PROBLEM IS YOU!

You rock... :)

I love where you said: "Is he really worried that the children might face some racism in their lives? NO. What he believes is that biracial children are an abomination."

That is it. You hit the nail on the head, I believe! *hugs* This too shall pass. This situation, though unfortunate for Beth and Terence, brought this issue to the light - and now, America is going to have to DEAL WITH IT instead of shrugging it off and trying to convince themselves by closing their eyes that it doesn't exist today.
